Missions designed for Grades K-1 are grouped together as Series I. Series I Missions are developmentally appropriate, written for the needs of pre-readers.

The feature of Series I Missions demonstrates how the curriculum accommodates primary-age students.

SERIES I FOR GRADES K-1

Series I's developmentally appropriate curriculum is delivered using Pictorial Activity Mats, called PAMs, and Mission Activity Cards, called MACs. These instructions give students a step-by-step pictorial guide to help them complete the Mission curriculum.

Every Mission includes relevant, engaging, hands-on activities to introduce and reinforce the science concepts of the curriculum. These team-based activities include free exploration, building exact models, and completing projects from pictorial instructions (PAMs and MACs).

Teamwork is integral to the completion of any Pitsco Mission. In Series I, students share responsibility in all activities.

Developed as part of Missions' versatile learning environment, the Mission Activity Turf (MAT, shown above) is a durable floor mat that enables a teacher to easily implement Series I Missions. Even primary-age students can arrange and rearrange a Missions classroom.

The Home Link activities, called Backpack Science, send Mission concepts home with students for further exploration. A nonfiction book is also included in every Backpack Science Home Link to further encourage student literacy.

The PAM Vocabulary

Pictorial Activity Mats (PAMs) use a simple pictorial vocabulary to describe all activities Series I students complete.

Linking School to Home

Home Links extend Missions outside the classroom walls. In Series I and II, the Home Links are called Backpack Science (shown above) and include Mission-related activities a student and parent can complete together. Series III and IV Home Links include math and science activities designed for students and their parents to complete using household materials.
